CHANCELLOR Rachel Reeves can’t expect many Christmas cards this year from owners of expensive homes after introducing a ‘mansion tax’ in last week’s Budget.
Properties worth more than £2million will have to pay thousands more in tax each year, with the most expensive facing an additional tax of up to £7,500 annually. But how will this affect the property market?
The new tax doesn’t come in until April 2028, so we can expect a glut of houses priced just under £2million coming up for sale as owners rush to downsize. Here’s how the mansion tax might affect local markets, and what £2million can buy……
PEMBROKESHIRE
The mansion tax may actually boost the West Wales market. ‘It is sure to lead to a growth in demand in cheaper areas such as Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion,’ says Carol Peett of West Wales Property Finders http://www.wetwalespropertyfinders.co.uk . You can buy wonderfully grand Georgian houses at a great price in Tenby.
