Pembroke has been voted the most desirable place to live in Wales, closely followed by Tenby; both in Pembrokeshire. Pembroke came sixth on the list for Britain, with Tenby in sixteenth place.
The survey, conducted by Rightmove, asked nearly 24,000 people where they would most like to live in Britain. The Isle of Skye was named the most desirable place to live in Britain, with Woolacombe in Devon coming second.
Pembroke was also the cheapest place to live of those in the top 10, with an average asking price of a property being £169,969 which would buy you a 3 bedroom cottage. The average asking price in Pembroke for a detached house comes in at around £215,254 according to Rightmove, with that of a flat being £97,313.
Both Pembroke and Tenby are beautiful walled towns, with Pembroke renowned as the birthplace of Henry VII and guarded by its magnificent Norman castle. With the stunning coastal national park and sandy Blue Flag beaches on their doorstep, it is hardly surprising that people wish to live there. A strong community spirit, one of the lowest crime rates in the UK and with the low cost of living (Pembrokeshire has the lowest council tax in Wales) it is little wonder that people are attracted to life in Pembrokeshire.
As well as a rich mediaeval history, Pembroke is full of Georgian and Tudor houses and places to eat and drink.
Rightmove’s research manager Abiola Oni said: “The nation clearly want to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city and settle down in some of the most beautiful places around Britain. It’s interesting that none of the areas are in the highest priced regions of Britain – London and the South East – likely because the appeal of some of the big cities is the good job options and transport links rather than moving for the amazing scenery.”
Rightmove’s Top 10 are:
- Isle of Skye, Scotland, £230,952
- Woolacombe, South West, £346,396
- Callington, South West, £235,860
- St Ives, South West, £366,628
- Keswick, North West, £319,628
- Pembroke, Wales, £169,969
- Padstow, South West, £421,290
- Salcombe, South West, £635,083
- Ambleside, North West, £431,669
- Newquay, South West, £246,976
