Marloes Sands in Pembrokeshire has been awarded the runner up prize at this year’s “Countryfile Beach of the Year” Awards.
Countryfile describe Marloes as “A fabulous 1.5 mile remote sandy beach with spectacular geology and an Iron Age hill fort. Excellent for bird watching (including puffins and peregrines offshire; stonechat and snipe inland) and undulating heathland”.
Marloes Sands has long been a popular location for film shoots. These include “Snow White and the Huntsman” in 2012 starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winston, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin and “The Lion in Winter” in 1968 starring Peter O’Toole, Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton.
Pembrokeshire beaches feature regularly in the best beach awards with Whitesands Bay near St Davids winning Countryfile Magazine’s “Beach of the Year 2014/2015”.
Whitesands is a glorious wide, sandy, Blue Flag beach, which, together with Freshwater West in South Pembrokeshire, is renowned as one of the best surfing beaches in Wales. Marloes now joins the list of other Pembrokeshire beaches such as Barafundle Bay and Tenby to win “best beach” awards.
