Not all coastal towns are grim out of season. Savvy house-hunters look for places with attractions in both summer and winter, says Ruth Bloomfield.
Tenby, Pembrokeshire
When buyers come to West Wales Property Finders looking for a winterproof seaside home, Managing Director Carol Peett directs them to this ancient walled town on the western shore of Carmarthen Bay,
Once the Summer holidays are over, Tenby launches a busy calendar of sporting, arts and social events: an international Ironman competition, blues festival and beer festival, as well as regular concerts, theatre shows and exhibitions. There is an annual fireworks display in neighbouring Saundersfoot, a Christmas market in the harbour – and those of a hardy disposition can compete in the Tenby Boxing Day swim. There are also many societies, whether you want to learn glass blowing, go kite surfing, or join a book club.
“Both Tenby and Saundersfoot thrive throughout the year”, says Peett. “They are bursting with wonderful restaurants, which are open throughout the winter. The Salt Cellar is a must for delicious food and a wonderful view over the beach”. Trains to Swansea take about an hour and 45 minutes.
