Where to buy property beside the sea: the top-performing coastal towns in the UK
Whatever happens with Brexit, there’s no better place to contemplate our future than staring out to sea. And with more than 8,000 miles of coastline, the UK has a seaside spot for every kind of buyer, from those seeking a bolt hole to investors, relocating families and downsizers.
Seven of the top ten most expensive coastal towns are located in the southwest, including Salcombe, Padstow, Dartmouth and Lyme Regis, making this the highest-priced region, according to analysis by the property portal Zoopla for the estate agency Jackson-Stops. Those looking for a home with potential for strong capital growth may wish to consider the east and southeast markets, says Laura Howard of Zoopla. “Towns in Kent, Essex and East Sussex take the top spots in our ranking of towns that have experienced the greatest capital growth in recent years,” she says.
However, bargain-hunters must head north. Blackpool and Morecambe in Lancashire, for example, register average house prices of £120,254 and £144,256 respectively.
Here are the top coastal towns and their more affordable alternatives (based on 2018 average prices)….
Tenby, Pembrokeshire
From Llandudno and Abersoch in the north to Aberdyfi and Aberystwyth near Cardigan Bay, a number of Welsh coastal locations are enjoying a renaissance, fuelled by an interest in outdoor pursuits and the Brexit-led trend for holidaying at home. However, as Carol Peett of West Wales Property Finders points out, it’s Pembrokeshire that is ticking buyers’ boxes. “We are spoilt for choice down here,” she says. “For the past year properties near the coast have been flying off the shelf, particularly those in the £350,000 to £550,000 price range, with lots of people investing in second homes and holiday lets, as well as lifestyle buyers — young families moving to give their children an old-fashioned childhood — and retirees.”
She singles out Tenby as the jewel in its crown because of its pastel-coloured elegant Georgian houses and boutiques. There is a five-bedroom house with steps down to the beach on Rock Terrace for £985,000 through FBM estate agency.
