Saundersfoot Harbour to Become an International Marine Tourism Destination

Saundersfoot Harbour, which dates back to the 1800s when it was a major harbour from which iron ore and coal were shipped from Wales, has taken a step nearer to becoming an international marine tourism destination having secured more than £600,000 in funding for its development.

The project to transform the facilities has been awarded £463,500 in European regional funds as well as £200,000 in tourism development money. The remainder of the funding for the first £900,000 phase will be met by the harbour commission which operates as a trust whereby any profits made are put back into supporting the harbour.

The money will go towards building new visitor pontoons and a new commercial slipway. It will see almost half a kilometre of walkways built to link the new facilities, including decking over the existing sluice gates, and a dry racking area for boat storage.

This is the first stage of a £4 million scheme to boost tourism and jobs in the town and follows on from the enormous boost given to the town in recent years by the development of the St Brides Spa Hotel in the town and, more recently, the coming of Coast Restaurant where celebrity chef, Will Holland, and his team have built up a huge following since its opening last May. Saundersfoot also has a number of wonderful restaurants, including The Mulberry, and with its Blue Flag beach, Christmas market, famous New Year’s Day charity swim and other events held throughout the year, is fast becoming the “must visit” place in West Wales.
