For many families, luxury now includes a grand dining room, wine cellar, walk-in pantry and children’s play room. Carol Peett, a buying agent at West Wales Property Finders, says: “Informal dining is out and opulent dining rooms are back, preferably with wonderful chandeliers and rich colours. Below stairs, everyone now wants a temperature-controlled wine cellar.” Kellett agrees: “Wine cellars are becoming the modern-day equivalent of Dad’s shed — where he goes for some peace and quiet.
“I’m also finding that open-plan living is becoming an irritant. Parents want a separate family room for the children, to shut out noise. And what everyone really wants, in these days of The Great British Bake Off aspirations, is a walk-in pantry — to store all that jam you won’t make.”
