Another reason for the high street’s success is that there is free on-street parking while the local car park costs £1 a day. This, says Carol Peett encourages locals and tourists to converge on Narberth, keeping it busy during the recession.
“It is a really special place — to put it into perspective, when my friends come up from London they always want to go shopping in Narberth, because it is just full of really individual, quirky shops which sell the most beautiful things,” she says.
The other policy that has helped to make Narberth special is that the council has deterred chain stores. Whether this policy will continue is uncertain.
