Coronavirus, the budget, Brexit, Megxit… Has it all got a bit too much? If you need to make a hasty escape, there are plenty of picturesque places to disappear to in the scattered collection of islands we call home. From a coastal cottage that can be reached only by boat to a grade I listed John Nash mansion tucked away in southwest Wales, each of these lonely abodes takes self-isolation to a whole new level.
There are many reasons why someone would want to venture off-grid. Carol Peett, of the buying agency West Wales Property Finders, says between 30% and 40% of her business is from buyers seeking solitude. “We get requests for remote properties from writers who need somewhere quiet to work, and from the occasional celebrity who is looking for privacy. Then there are people who just want somewhere to unwind and get away from it all.
“I also get young families from London who are fed up with the rat race and want to live a slower, more ecofriendly life.” She adds that many end up starting small businesses they can run from home.
An increasing number of buyers are looking for dark-sky areas so they can gaze up at the stars — get too near a town and light pollution will swallow up the Milky Way……
